New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that became a focal point during his election bid.

An Iconic Home

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the primary dwelling for most New York City mayors from the post-war period.

However, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a core issue, did not confirm his residency plans right away following his triumph in November.

"My choice rested on keeping my family safe and the importance of dedicating my complete efforts on enacting the agenda for affordability voters supported," the Mayor-Elect declared on Monday.

Thanking a Neighborhood

His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community known for its diverse immigrant communities and culinary diversity.

"To the people of Astoria: thank you for showing us what is great about New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"Although my address will change in Astoria, Astoria will always live inside me and my efforts as mayor," he added.

Campaign Controversy

In his election campaign, Mamdani connected his central policy – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.

However his critics, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the rent-stabilized unit even though he came from a well-known family.

Previous Exceptions

Not every mayor have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his tenure, which ended in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a space for civic gatherings, and championed a major refurbishment of the older mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

As he settles into Gracie Mansion for his inauguration on 1 January, he will find himself in surroundings far removed from his modest Astoria digs.

With its cream-colored walls, green shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home with views of the East River.

Inside, the lower floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished to reflect the home's historical period.

The compound, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

A number of people have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors would sometimes open and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards made strange noises.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "I don't care the skeptics say," he declared in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, a policy where the city sets limits on how much building managers can hike the monthly cost each year.

City residents consider these apartments essential protections as the housing expenses exceeds the means of many residents.

It was reported Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the property website Zillow, the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
