Israeli citizens commemorate two-year remembrance of 7 October attacks as Palestinian peace talks proceed
Israelis have assembled throughout the country to commemorate the second anniversary since the Hamas-led attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks continued in Egypt over a conclusion to the war in Gaza.
The attack saw in excess of 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others captured back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely deadliest day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.
Israel answered by beginning a armed campaign in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as accurate by the UN and other international bodies.
"The aggressive opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," the leader added on that day.
He also promised to "realize all the aims of the war: the release of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will never again create a threat to Israel".
Remembrance Ceremonies Across Israel
The government authorities rescheduled formal remembrance events until mid-October - after the completion of the festive season - but gatherings still took place throughout the country on Tuesday.
A remembrance service for the families of people killed in the Hamas attack was conducted in Tel Aviv. Organized by the affected families, it was televised across Israeli TV networks.
Some time earlier, a silent tribute was observed throughout the country.
Negotiation Meetings in Egypt
At the same time, Israeli and Hamas delegations convened in the North African Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of third-party negotiations to review the provisions of the plan.
A high-ranking Palestinian official involved in the talks indicated that an evening round of negotiations commenced at evening in Egypt.
The source stated the day's discussions finished without tangible results, due to conflicting views over the suggested Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not resume combat after the initial stage of the agreement.
He commented that the negotiations are "challenging and have yet to achieve any significant progress," but pointed out that intermediaries are striving to close the disparities between the conflicting groups.
Critical Matters in Negotiations
- A permanent halt to fighting
- The trade of the captives still kept by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Measures for humanitarian aid provision
- Future management of the area
Citizen Sentiment
In the city's public square previously, 29-year-old a woman - whose family member lived through the attack on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were killed and numerous more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - told: "No place feels like home anymore and until every captive come back none of us will be secure."
"Once we see everyone home again, we can feel relief once more. Then we can commence rebuild," she concluded.
In front of the leader's home in Jerusalem, people gathered to show their solidarity for the families of the hostages. Israel says 48 continue in detention in Gaza, 20 of whom are considered to be living.
Protester a participant remarked: "We must do every compromise required for the abducted to come back home. But we really want promises that we will be secure."
Opinion polls now consistently show that approximately seventy percent of Israelis want the conflict to conclude in as payment for the liberation of the abducted.
Gaza Conditions
At the location of Nova festival, those paying respects assembled to pay their respects.
From the site, the sound of Israeli air strikes and artillery could be noticed just a short distance away in Gaza, where observers reported the severe Israeli shelling carried on.
In the main city, bombardments were reported in the morning of Tuesday in the west side neighborhood, sector and locality areas and in the east side district of that sector, as well the settlement to the northwest.
"Once the night arrives, the fear arrives with it," relocated urban resident a local woman, whose young son was died by an Israeli air strike previously, described.
"My family are terrified of the attacks. During nighttime we are resting together, embracing, notably my youngest child who places his head on me throughout the night."
"Every second we check the reports to see what happened. And I'm worried that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the war will resume to us."
