Antony Price, Renowned for Creating Looks for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer who crafted many legendary styles worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.
He was celebrated for his defined forms and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the light-hued ensembles that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."
This news arrives shortly after he unveiled his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he commenced his career designing men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in shaping form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he began working on pieces for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including a number of outfits for her American tour after becoming Duchess.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in collaboration with the design house 16Arlington.
